After this January's Patch Tuesday event day, Windows Server administrators complained that the new update caused numerous serious problems with their servers. These bad problems included Hyper-V failing to boot, the primary controller experiencing an endless reboot cycle, and ReFS volumes becoming inaccessible and showing up as RAW file systems.

Following these reports, Microsoft appears to have removed the cumulative update from Windows Update, although they have re-released the update with warnings. Now, Microsoft has released an out-of-band update to fix these issues.

This OOB update fixes issues of the January Windows Update

Microsoft released an out-of-band (OOB) update for certain versions of Windows on January 17, 2022. The update resolves issues related to VPN connectivity, Windows Server domain controller reboots, virtual machine boot failures, and removable media in ReFS format failing to install.

All updates can be found in the Microsoft Update Catalog, and some are also available as an optional update in Windows Update. Please check the release notes for your version of Windows for more information.
