Macrium Reflect ransomware protection- Image Guardian protects backups from ransomware attacks and adds an extra layer of security. For broader protection, try AOMEI Ransomware Protection.
Backups are one of the most reliable ways to recover from a ransomware attack. However, modern ransomware no longer targets only active data. Many attacks are designed to locate and encrypt backup files as well, preventing victims from restoring their systems without paying the ransom.
However, traditional antivirus software focuses on detecting and blocking malware, but it may not always stop ransomware from modifying specific files or folders once it gains access to a system. Many backup files appear as normal files to the operating system, so ransomware can still encrypt them before antivirus tools can react. As a result, relying on antivirus software alone may not be enough to protect backup data.
Don’t worry about it, you can combine antivirus software and Macrium Reflect ransomware protection - Image Guardian. This new feature protects backups from ransomware, creating a secure, ransomware-free environment.
Macrium Reflect is a backup and disk imaging solution that creates system images, disk clones, and file backups, widely used for recovery. To enhance backup security, it introduces Macrium Image Guardian to protect backup files from ransomware and unauthorized modification.
It controls write access to Macrium backup files, typically in formats such as .mrimg, .mrbak, .mrex, and .mrcbt. Once enabled, only trusted Macrium processes can modify or delete protected backup files.
If ransomware or another unauthorized application attempts to encrypt, delete, or alter these files, the action is blocked. This helps keep backup images intact and usable, especially after an attack.
📌 Real-Time Backup File Monitoring: Macrium Image Guardian continuously monitors protected backup locations. Whenever an application attempts to modify, delete, or encrypt a protected backup file, the system verifies that the request originates from a trusted Macrium process. Suspicious activities from unknown programs are immediately blocked, helping prevent backup files from being compromised.
📌Block Unauthorized Encryption Attempts: One of the primary purposes is to prevent ransomware from encrypting backup images. If malicious software attempts to modify a protected backup file, the request is denied before encryption.
📌 Controlled Access to Macrium Backup Files: Macrium Image Guardian restricts write access to Macrium backup files. Only authorized Macrium Reflect processes are allowed to create, update, or delete these files. Other apps, even if they have system permissions, cannot modify protected files, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized changes.
📌 Integration With Automatic Backups: Macrium Reflect supports scheduling backup tasks, allowing users to run backups regularly without manual intervention. While Macrium Image Guardian works seamlessly with these workflows, it protects newly created backup files while ensuring normal backup activities continue as usual.
The setup process of enabling Macrium Ransomware Protection is straightforward and can be completed directly within the software. It’s best to create a backup task (if not) and then enable it in the Macrium Image Guardian settings.
Step 1. Open Macrium Reflect on your computer. If this is your first time using Macrium Reflect, you need to image the disk in the main interface. If not, click Other Tasks in the top menu and select Macrium Image Guardian Settings.
Step 2. In the Macrium Image Guardian Settings window, check Turn on Image Guardian. Here are two options:
Step 3. In addition, you can add Email, protected volumes, or check event logs, including error, warning, and information logs. Click OK to confirm this.
Be sure to add all backup destinations to the protected volumes. While Macrium Image Guardian adds an important layer of protection, combining it with sound backup strategies can further reduce ransomware risk.
Macrium Image Guardian primarily protects backup files created by Macrium Reflect, ensuring they cannot be encrypted or altered by unauthorized applications. However, it does not directly safeguard regular documents, photos, databases, or other personal and business data stored on the system. If ransomware infects a device, these files may still be vulnerable unless additional security tools are in place.
Similar to Macrium Image Guardian, AOMEI Backupper Professional integrates the Ransomware Protection feature, which protects backups from ransomware, with broader targets, including backup images created by AOMEI Backupper, specific file types, and files or folders. You can add the file extensions of backup files created by other backup software to the protected list.
It allows you to add trust apps or folders from the Trust List and Block History, or block them from the Block List and Block History, thereby granting higher permissions to more software for greater convenience.
In addition, it’s a complete backup solution, allowing you to create a system backup, disk backup, file backup, etc., and run schedule backup automatically. With a suite of space-saving features, it minimizes backup time and storage requirements
Step 1. Open AOMEI Backupper Professional after installing. Under the Tools tab, click Ransomware Protection.
Step 2. Toggle the Enable Ransomware Protection tab. The backup image created by AOMEI Backupper is automatically checked. To enhance data security, specify file type, files, or folders
Step 3. Once enabled, you’ll be asked to add apps to the trust or block list. Check the specific app and click Add to Trust List or Add to Block List. Or simply click Ignore.
Step 4. Switch to the Trust List, Block List, Block History, and manually configure them. In the Block History window, you can choose to clear block history, add to trust list, or add to block list.
Macrium Image Guardian provides strong protection for backup images created by Macrium Reflect and helps maintain their integrity, ensuring they remain usable for system recovery after an attack. If you want a more comprehensive ransomware protection, try AOMEI Ransomware Protection. It protects backup images created by AOMEI Backupper and other backup software, specific file types, files, and folders.
However, backup protection alone is not a complete ransomware defense. Combining it with antivirus software, offline backup, versioned backups, etc., can significantly improve overall resilience. A layered protection ensures that even if ransomware bypasses one protection layer, reliable backups are still available to restore critical data.
