You have moved to a new iPhone, or perhaps you want to share a custom ringtone with a friend. The file may be easy to send, but getting it to appear under Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone is a different task.

The right way to send ringtones from iPhone to iPhone depends on where the ringtone came from.

Step 1. Connect your old iPhone to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, and place it near the new iPhone.

Step 2. Turn on the new iPhone. When the Set Up New iPhone prompt appears on the old iPhone, tap Continue.

Step 3. Use the old iPhone to scan the animation displayed on the new iPhone. When prompted, enter your old iPhone’s passcode on the new device.

Step 4. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a cellular network. Follow the prompts to activate cellular service and set up Face ID or Touch ID.

Do not erase the old iPhone until you confirm that your important content and ringtone files are available on the new device.

Method 2. Restore Purchased Ringtones on the New iPhone

👍 Best for: Ringtones bought from Apple’s Tone Store with the same Apple Account.

You do not need to extract a purchased ringtone from the old iPhone. Apple links eligible Tone Store purchases to your Apple Account, so you can download them again on another iPhone.

Step 1. Sign in to the new iPhone with the Apple Account used to buy the ringtone. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone or another alert type you want to change.

Step 2. Tap Download All Purchased Tones.

After the download, tap the ringtone to preview and select it.

You may not see Download All Purchased Tones if all eligible tones are already downloaded or the account has no eligible purchases. Apple also notes that some previously purchased tones may no longer be available for download. Tone Store availability can vary by country or region.

A song purchased from the iTunes Store is not automatically a purchased ringtone. If you have an eligible local audio file instead, use the next method.

Method 3. Share a Custom Ringtone with AirDrop and GarageBand

AirDrop can send an .m4r, .m4a, .mp3, or another accessible audio file. However, receiving the file does not always add it to the ringtone list. The recipient can use Apple’s GarageBand app to export the audio as a ringtone.

Part 1. Send the Ringtone File with AirDrop

Step 1. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both iPhones. Make sure AirDrop receiving is enabled on the target iPhone.

• The iPhone to iPhone method performs a full device migration and the existing data on the target iPhone will be overwritten.
• Be sure your iPhone have enough available storage and updated.
