How to Undo DiskPart Clean and Recover Lost Partitions

To undo DiskPart Clean, identify the command and later writes first. Partition recovery may help after Clean, while completed Clean All overwrites the disk’s sectors.

If you ran DiskPart clean on the wrong disk, stop running disk commands and do not write any new data to that disk. There is no ordinary undo command that can automatically restore its previous layout.

Recovery may still be possible after clean because removing partition information differs from overwriting every data sector. However, clean all performs a much broader operation, and subsequent formatting or file transfers also affect what remains.

Before attempting recovery, check whether you ran clean or clean all, and what happened afterward. For the general recovery process, see how to recover deleted partition with data

Can You Undo DiskPart Clean?

You cannot directly undo DiskPart clean, but you may be able to restore deleted partition and the data if enough information remains and the data has not been overwritten.

Assigning drive letters or recreating partitions with their old names does not restore the original partition structure. Because clean applies to the selected physical disk, several volumes may disappear at once. Start by identifying the disk that was cleaned.

DiskPart Clean vs Clean All

The two DiskPart clean commands do not have the same effect.

⌨️ Command ⚙️ What it does 🔄 Can you recover the data?
clean Removes partitioning information from the selected disk Possibly. The original data might still be there to scan
clean all Overwrites every sector with zeros No, anything in those overwritten sectors is gone for good

Clean all is much more destructive than a regular clean.

  • If it completed, your recovery options are basically gone.
  • If it was interrupted, you can't just guess how much was overwritten that needs a separate check.

Don't run either command again just to see what happens or to figure out which one was used. You'll only make things worse.

Check What You Did Afterward

If the command window is still open, review the commands already shown. Do not run more disk commands to check what happened.

Did you do any of the following after running clean?

  • Create partition: This writes new partition information.
  • Format the disk: This writes a new file system and may overwrite remaining file information.
  • Convert partition style: This changes the disk partition layout between MBR and GPT.
  • Copy files: New files may overwrite the deleted data.
  • Install Windows: This writes large amounts of new data to the disk.

Stop any of these operations that are still running. More writes to the disk could make the deleted partitions and files harder to recover. If you ran DiskPart’s clean on a USB drive, see how to recover an accidentally deleted USB partition.

Identify the Disk You Cleaned

Open Disk Management and find the disk you cleaned.

  • Check its capacity and model, if shown, to make sure you have the right disk.
  • Cancel any prompt to initialize or format it. You only need to check its current partitions.
  • Do not rely on the disk number alone. Windows may assign a different number after you reconnect the disk.

If you're dealing with an external drive, double-check that the cable and power connection are secure. You can find more specific steps in external hard drive partition recovery.

How to Recover Lost Partitions After Running DiskPart Clean

AOMEI FastRecovery is Windows data recovery software with a Partition Recovery feature that restores a missing partition and the data inside it. It provides users with two scanning methods:

  • Fast Search: It is recommended because it can find deleted or lost partitions quickly.
  • Full Search: It will scan the disk sector by sector and generally takes longer. Only use this when Fast Search can't.

Download and install it on another physical drive, not on the drive you cleaned in Diskpart.

A reliable Windows data recovery software that easily recovers deleted or lost partitions or retrieve files.

Step 1. Open AOMEI FastRecovery, select Disk Data Recovery > Partition Recovery.

Choose Partition Recovery

Step 2. Compare the disk’s model, capacity, number, and displayed layout with your original. Select the cleaned disk and click Next.

Choose Disk

Step 3. Choose Fast Search to find deleted or lost partition quickly. If not, click Back, select Full Search instead.

Choose a Search Method

⚠️Notes:
  • Full Search scans the disk more extensively and generally takes longer than Fast Search.

  • Pause suspends searching temporarily, while Stop ends the current search.

Step 4. Compare the disk info with the former layout. Select the cleaned partition and click Next. Do not assume all belong together.

  • Partition: The name or identifier assigned to the detected partition.
  • File System: The detected file system type, such as NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and exFAT.
  • Capacity: The size of the partition. Compare it with the size you remember.
  • Start Sector and End Sector: The boundaries of the partition on the disk, which confirm where it used to be.
  • Flag: The partition type, such as Primary or Logical.

Step 5. Select the partition you cleaned in Diskpart and click Proceed.

After the restoration finishes, check the volume in Windows and open your folders or files to confirm everything is there.

Verify Data Before Resuming Installation

If you were reinstalling Windows, wait until you have recovered your files and saved them to another drive.

Before continuing, check that:

  • The restored partition is the size you expect.
  • Your folders are present.
  • Important files open correctly.
  • Project folders include the files needed to open and use the projects.
  • You have copied the recovered files to another physical drive and checked that they work.

If files are still missing or will not open, do not create partitions or format the disk. Contact technical support before continuing the Windows installation.

FAQs

Does unallocated space prove every file was overwritten?

No. Unallocated describes the current layout, not a sector-by-sector record of surviving data.

Should the old partitions be recreated first?

No. Replacement partitions do not validate the original arrangement and can change information needed for recovery.

Conclusion

After accidentally running DiskPart clean, check which command you used and what you did afterward. Stop writing to the disk and confirm its original partition layout before recovery. AOMEI FastRecovery includes a Partition Recovery feature that can recover deleted partition and the data inside it.

Once the partitions are restored, make sure your files are complete and open correctly before reinstalling Windows or using the disk again.
