To undo deleted downloads in Chrome, first check whether you removed a history entry or the actual file. Find the right next step for missing files, accidental deletion, unavailable download links, and interrupted transfers.

Chrome's download list keeps track of your transfers, but the files themselves live in a folder on your computer. Removing an entry from that list doesn't delete the saved file. A custom save location can also explain why a download isn't in the usual Downloads folder.
Step 1. Open Chrome, click the 3-dots icon and select Settings > Downloads. Note the current download location.
Step 2. Open File Explorer and check that folder. Search by filename or extension if needed.
Step 3. Check any folders or drives you previously selected when saving downloads. Today’s default location does not identify every past download location.

The shortcut works in File Explorer, where the file was deleted. It does not rebuild cleared Chrome download history. Use it immediately after an accidental deletion; later file operations can change which action Windows will undo.

Step 2. Press Ctrl + Z once. Then, check whether the file returns and opens normally.
Avoid repeatedly pressing the shortcut, since you could undo unrelated operations. If nothing returns, check the Recycle Bin.

An ordinary deletion often moves a local download into the Recycle Bin. Restoring it returns the file to its original folder. This method won’t help if the Recycle Bin was emptied or the deletion bypassed it, such as with Shift + Delete.
Step 1. Open Recycle Bin from the desktop.
Step 2. Locate the download by name. Check its original location and deletion date to distinguish similar files.
Step 3. Right-click the file, choose Restore, then open its original folder to check.
Large downloads can bypass Recycle Bin and display the deleted files too big for the Recycle Bin error when they exceed its configured capacity.

Downloading another copy can be simpler than recovering deleted files. It works well for unchanged documents, installers, and attachments. However, a fresh download won’t contain edits you made locally, and an expired link may require the sender or website owner to provide access again.
Step 1. Open Chrome, click 3-dots icon and select Downloads to view download history.
Step 2. Find the entry and click Copy Download Link. If the entry is gone, check the original email, account page, or browsing history.
Step 3. Paste the download link into another window and download the file again.

File History can bring back previously saved copies, but only if it was already turned on and the folder with your download was included in its backup. Don't assume Downloads was covered just because File History was running. Turning it on now won't recreate an older copy that was never saved
Step 1. Connect the File History backup drive to your Windows PC. In File Explorer, right-click the folder containing deleted downloads and select Restore previous versions. Check Show more options if necessary.
Step 2. Select a folder version from before the deletion. Expand Open > Open in File History to check its data.
Step 3. Expand Restore and select Restore to… to save it elsewhere without replacing current files.

A file that never finished downloading needs a working connection to complete. Recovery software can't recreate bytes that were never saved. Chrome may resume an interrupted download once connectivity returns; if not, just click Resume to continue it yourself.

Step 2. Find the interrupted transfer and select Resume, if available.
Step 3. If it cannot resume, return to the original website and start a new download.
A .crdownload file is incomplete; changing its extension does not supply missing content.

A file that disappears right after downloading may have been quarantined. Windows Security keeps a record of the detection and its status. Only restore the file after confirming it's safe. A Chrome download warning alone doesn't mean Defender has a recoverable copy.
Step 1. Open Windows Security > Protection history.
Step 2. Expand the matching event and check its filename, location, and detection details.
Step 3. If it says Threat quarantined and you have confirmed a false positive, select Restore under the available actions.
Defender may detect the restored file again. Don’t repeatedly allow an unverified download; obtain a trusted copy or have the detection reviewed.
Does clearing Chrome download history delete my files?
On a computer, it removes the list entries while leaving downloaded files in their saved locations. Check those folders before attempting recovery.
Can the Temp folder restore deleted downloads?
It is not a reliable backup of completed downloads. A temporary file may be incomplete or unrelated, so searching Temp should not replace the applicable recovery methods above.
Can Chrome restore files from an expired download link?
The download record does not contain a backup copy. Request a new link, restore an existing backup, or attempt recovery of the deleted local file.
