What Is the Best Way to Clone or Copy a SD Card?

“I am surprising three of my friends with their own RG351p. I am currently using 351ELEC and getting the settings perfect, games added, images scraped, and all that so it is as plug and play as possible.

I need to create 3 more cards, what is the best way to do that? Usually it would seem drag and drop, but the double partitions have me worried.”

- Question from Reddit

Searching “clone SD card with multiple partitions” online, especially forums, users always quote Win32 Disk Imager, a free and open source imaging and cloning software, which creates an exact image of SD card and writes the image file to a new one.

You can try it, but still some users report that Win32 Disk Imager only clone one partition instead of whole SD card. That's OK, we will do this with another tool, simpler and more intuitive. You can directly see the SD card and all partitions on it, as well as the result of cloning. Let’s get started!

Win32DiskImager - Clone SD Card with Multiple Partitions

The process of cloning SD card with multiple partitions using Win32DiskImager involves creating an image file of the original card and then writing the image file to another card. So, we’ll show you the steps in two parts.

Part 1: Create An Image File of SD Card

Step 1. Download Win32DiskImager from the official website and connect the SD card you want to clone using a card reader.

Step 2. Open Win32DiskImager after installing. Then, navigate to the Device menu and select the SD card with multiple partitions. Be sure to select the first partition with a drive letter.

Step3.Click the folder icon and select a location to save the image file temporarily. Be sure to name it with a .img extension.

Step 4. Click Read to create an image file of the SD card. The Read Only Allocated Partitions option clones onlythe used sectors of the SD card.

Step 5. Wait until the process finishes and click OK.

Part 2: Write Image File to New SD Card

Step 1. Connect the new SD card you want to write the image file to and be sure it’s recognized well.

Step 2. Then, go to the Device menu again and select the new SD card to save image file.

Step 3. Click the folder icon and select the image file you created earlier.

Step 4. At last, click Write >Yes to write the image file to the new SD card. Once done, go to Disk Management and check if it clones SD card with multiple partitions.

Easier Way to Clone SD Card with Multiple Partitions [3 Steps]

If Win32DiskImager only clones one partition or is not working properly, you can still clone multiple partitions on your SD card in an easier way using the “real” cloning software - AOMEI Cloner. It allows you to directly clone SD card to another without creating an image file.

AOMEI Cloner
Best SD Card Cloning Software on Windows
  • Easy to use and no technical skills required.
  • Cloning scope - clone entire SD card and all partitions on it, or individual partitions.
  • Intelligent clone (default) - easier to clone large card to smaller card, save time and effort as it clones only the used sectors of a drive.
  • Edit Partitions - partitions on the larger SD card are automatically resized, e.g, clone SD card to larger SD card.
  • Compatible with different SD card types (i.e., standard card, SDHX, SDXC, SDUC, etc) and most popular brands, such as Samsung, Lexar, SanDisk, PNY, Kingston, etc.

Step 1. Connect the two SD cards to your computer using a reliable card reader. Then, open AOMEI Cloner and click Clone > Disk Clone subsequently.
