External hard drive partition recovery requires stable disk access and correct volume identification. Check both before restoring the missing partition and verifying its files.
Your external hard drive is missing a partition, and the files on it are out of reach. Can you get them back?
Maybe. It all depends on whether the drive is still readable and if the data hasn't been overwritten yet.
Before trying any recovery, run a quick check:
If you hear clicking or the drive keeps dropping its connection, stop using it immediately. Those are signs of a failing drive, and further scans could ruin your chances.
Cancel any prompt to to format or initialize it. First, confirm the drive's condition. Then, choose a recovery method that matches what you're seeing. For wider partition recovery, check how to recover deleted partition with data.
Before searching for the missing partition, make sure your computer can consistently detect the external hard drive. Problems with the USB cable, port, enclosure, or power supply can also make a drive inaccessible.
If the drive has no unusual noises or visible damage, connect it directly to a suitable port on your computer. If the drive needs external power, use its original adapter.
Open Disk Management and check whether the drive stays visible and shows the correct capacity.
| 👁🗨 What you see | ✅ What to do |
|---|---|
| Stable capacity and connection | Continue checking the partition layout |
| Drive absent through one cable or port | Try a compatible cable or another port once. |
| The drive repeatedly disconnects | Stop scanning and check the connection or hardware. |
| Clicking sounds or persistent read errors | Stop repeated scan and seek hardware assessment |
Do not keep unplugging and reconnecting a drive that shows signs of failure. If it contains files you cannot replace, consider professional assistance before running a long recovery scan.
Check which partitions are still visible on the external hard drive and where Unallocated space appears. This helps you identify the missing partition before recovery.
Note the following so you can compare them with the found partitions:
Unallocated space does not necessarily mean the files are gone. Likewise, being able to open one partition does not prove the rest of the drive is healthy.
If all partitions disappeared after you ran clean, see how to undo DiskPart Clean.
Choose the method that matches what you see:
| 💾 Disk state | ✅ Suitable method |
|---|---|
| Not showing up in Disk Management | Method 1: Check the USB cable, port, and power supply |
| Has a recognizable file system, but no drive letter | Method 2: Assign a drive letter |
| Missing partition, shown as unallocated space | Method 3: Find and recover lost partition using software |
| RAW partition, or Windows asks to format it | Method 4: Recover missing files from RAW drive |
| Clicks, repeatedly disconnects, or reports read errors | Stop the software scan; reassess the connection or hardware |
👍 Best for: An external hard drive that does not appear in Disk Management, without clicking noises or visible damage.
A connection problem can prevent Windows from detecting the drive. Check the cable, USB port, and power supply before searching for a missing partition.
If the drive remains undetected and has no signs of physical failure, test it on another computer once. If neither computer detects it, stop these checks and contact the manufacturer or a data recovery service.
If the drive becomes accessible, copy important files to another healthy drive. If it appears without a drive letter, follow Method 2. If the missing partition’s space shows as Unallocated, follow Method 3.
👍 Best for: An ordinary, healthyvolume with a recognizable file system and no assigned drive letter.
This method applies when your drive shows up in Disk Management but doesn't have a drive letter. Do not apply this method to unallocated space or lost partition.
Step 1. Right-click the Start menu and select Disk Management to open it.
Step 2. Identify the external hard drive by its capacity and file system, right-click itand select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Step 3. Click Add if no letter is assigned, choose an available letter, and confirm.
Then, open File Explorer and see if your drive appears again. If Windows requests formatting, cancel the prompt. Adding a letter has not resolved the underlying readability problem.
👍 Best for: Recover the missing partition with its original layout while the drive is stable and detected.
AOMEI FastRecovery is Windows data recovery software with a Partition Recovery feature that restores a missing partition and the data inside it. It provides users with two scanning methods:
Download and install this software on another physical drive, not the external drive you're trying to recover. Make sure the external drive is securely connected and has a stable power supply.
A reliable Windows data recovery software that easily recovers deleted or lost partitions or retrieve files.
Step 1. Open AOMEI FastRecovery, and select Disk Data Recovery > Partition Recovery.
Step 2. Match the disk number, model, capacity, and layout to your external hard drive. Then select it and click Next.
Step 3. Choose Fast Search to find deleted or lost partition quickly. If not, click Back, select Full Search instead. Full Search scans the disk more extensively and generally takes longer than Fast Search.
Step 3. Compare the disk info with the former layout. Select lost partition and click Next.
Step 5. Select the partition you cleaned in Diskpart and click Proceed.
After the restoration finishes, check the volume in Windows and open your folders or files to confirm everything is there. For an NTFS partitions, learn how to recover deleted NTFS partition.
👍 Best for: An external hard drive with a RAW partition that remains stable and readable.
A RAW drive still exists, but Windows cannot recognize its file system. You can choose to format this drive, but the data on it may be overwritten. If you don't want to lose data, recover files before attempt repairs.
AOMEI FastRecovery's Disk Data Recovery feature can pull lost files off a RAW drive. You don't have to recover everything, either just pick the files that matter most. To make things easier, you can use search, filters, sort, and thumbnail previews to quickly find exactly what you need.
Step 1. Download and install AOMEI FastRecovery on a different drive, not on the RAW external hard drive. Then, open this software and select Disk Data Recovery.
Step 2. Identify the RAW external hard drive by its model and capacity, then click Scan. A Deep Scan starts automatically.
Step 3. Browse the results by Type or Path. Search by filename or extension, sort or filter to narrow the list. Thumbnail preview helps identify missing images or videos.
Step 4. Select missing documents, photos, videos, or other files and click Recover. Save them to a different, healthy drive. Another folder or partition on the same RAW external hard drive may overwrite data you want to recover.
Open the recovered files to check that they are complete and work correctly. Keep a separate copy before making further changes to the RAW drive.
External hard drives may hold years of files. Opening one recent document is not enough to check whether recovery worked.
Open a few files from different folders, dates, and file types. Check both large and small files:
Before reusing the external hard drive, copy important files that work correctly to another physical drive.
If the partition is restored but files still will not open, avoid further changes and contact technical support. If the drive starts disconnecting or repeatedly reports read errors, stop scanning and get the hardware checked.
Successful external hard drive partition recovery starts with a stable connection and identifying the right partition. After recovery, check your files and save a separate copy before making further changes to the drive.
