Can You Get Your Data Back After Initialization on PS4?

Can you get your data back after PS4 initialization? The answer depends on the missing files and your existing copies. Check which recovery option fits your saves, purchased games, screenshots, or video clips.

Your PS4 starts up after initialization, but your games and progress are missing. Signing back in brings your account back onto the console. It doesn’t automatically bring back every file.

You can get your data back after PS4 initialization if a usable copy exists elsewhere. Game saves may be available in PlayStation Plus online storage or a USB backup. Purchased games can be downloaded again, but downloading a game doesn’t restore its local save.

Sony’s PS4 initialization guide states that initialization deletes system-storage data and cannot be undone. Start by identifying what you lost and where another copy might exist.

What Can You Restore After Initializing a PS4?

“Game data” can mean several different things. Your installed game, saved progress, and captured videos have different recovery options.

📋 What you need 🔍 Where to look ⚙️ Relevant method
Saved game progress Existing PS Plus cloud saves Method 1
Individually copied saves USB storage device Method 2
Saves, captures, and other backed-up data Full PS4 USB backup Method 3
Purchased digital games Library under the purchasing account Method 4

For example, downloading a purchased game can restore its installation. Your completed missions still depend on a saved game or the game’s own online account system.

Check your backups before starting over. Creating new progress can make it harder to distinguish the old save from a fresh one.

Method 1: Download Existing PS Plus Cloud Saves

👍 Best for: Restoring game progress previously uploaded to PlayStation Plus online storage.

Cloud storage can hold a copy of your progress outside the console. However, a subscription alone doesn’t prove that your latest save was uploaded. You need an existing cloud copy and access to the corresponding account.

Step 1. Sign in to your PS4 with the original save account and an active PlayStation Plus subscription. Then, open Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in Online Storage.

Step 2. Select Download to System Storage, then choose the game abd review the available save files. Compare their dates before selecting the copy you want to download.

Step 3. Select Download. Review any overwrite prompt before replacing a save already on the console.

Install the corresponding game and check the restored progress. An older cloud save can only return you to its recorded point. If no suitable save appears, check your USB copies next.

Method 2: Copy Saved Games from a USB Device

👍 Best for: Restoring saves individually copied to USB before initialization.

A USB save copy is different from a full console backup. You can copy selected game saves back without restoring the entire PS4. Sony requires you to have signed in with the same account used to create the copies.

Step 1. Connect the USB device containing your previously copied saves. Sign in with the account associated with them and go to Settings > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data on USB Storage Device.

Step 2. Select Copy to System Storage.

Step 3. Choose the game and the required files, then elect Copy. Check any overwrite warning before replacing an existing save and confirm it's recognized.

Method 3: Restore a Full PS4 USB Backup

👍 Best for: Restoring several data types from an existing PS4 system backup.

A full backup can contain saved games, screenshots, video clips, and other selected console data. It only restores what was included when the backup was created.

⚠️Note: Restoring a full backup erases the data currently stored on your PS4. Protect any new saves or captures before proceeding. So be sure to check its date and available details before selecting one.

Step 1. Connect the USB drive containing your PS4 backup. Open Settings > System > Back Up and Restore.

Step 2. Select Restore PS4.

Step 3. Choose the required backup and click Yes to restore. Keep the console powered on throughout the operation.

Check your restored files after the console restarts. Trophies are excluded from PS4 backup data.

Method 4: Download Purchased Games Again

👍 Best for: Reinstalling digital games associated with your purchasing account.

You may be able to get your data back after PS4 initialization through several existing copies. Your purchase library serves a narrower purpose: it provides access to eligible game downloads.

Step 1. Sign in with the account used to purchase the game. Open Library > Purchased.

Step 2. Select the game, then select Download. Wait for installation before checking the game.

Step 3.Restore your game progress separately using Method 1, 2, or 3, depending on the backup you have.

For missing add-ons, open the game’s library entry and check PlayStation Store > Your Add-Ons.

What If You Have No Backup?

If your only save existed on the initialized console, these methods cannot recreate it. Reinstalling the game or buying PlayStation Plus afterward doesn’t generate an earlier save.

Quick initialization also doesn’t establish that a Windows recovery software can restore usable PS4 saves. Don’t treat an internal console drive as an ordinary USB drive for file recovery.

There is a separate possibility for exported files. You may have copied screenshots or videos to a regular FAT32 or exFAT USB drive before initialization. Those exported files exist independently of the console. You can scan USB drive for deleted copies, but not initialized PS4 internal storage or PS4 extended storage.

Stop writing to that USB drive. Download and install Windows data recovery software - AOMEI FastRecovery elsewhere, not the USB drive. Meanwhile, you need to prepare another drive for the recovered files.

To recover deleted files from a USB drive, open this software and select the USB drive containing deleted files. You can then find what you want to recover and click the Recover button to start.

FAQs

Does initialization delete my PSN account?

Initialization removes local users and their data from the console. You can sign back in with your existing PSN account. Local saves still require a separate surviving copy.

Can PS Plus restore screenshots and video clips?

PS Plus online storage is for saved game data. For captures, check an existing full PS4 backup or files previously exported elsewhere.

Is Restore Default Settings the same as initialization?

No. Sony’s Safe Mode guide distinguishes these options. Restore Default Settings resets settings without deleting stored games, captures, or saves. It cannot reverse a completed initialization.

Does PS4 initialization erase connected USB devices?

Sony states that initialization doesn’t delete data from connected USB storage devices. Check those devices before assuming every copy is gone.

In the End

To get your data back after PS4 initialization, first check for a cloud save or USB backup. Use your purchase library to reinstall games, then restore progress separately.

If no copy exists, avoid another reset as a recovery attempt. Start with the oldest available backup and verify its contents before replacing any newer files.
