This guide explains how to selectively restore iPhone backup data, sync individual data types from iCloud, extract an Apple backup, and prepare flexible backups for future use.
You’ve started using a new iPhone, but now you only want to recover a few things from the old device, perhaps your photos, contacts, messages, or Notes. Restoring every old app and setting may fill the new iPhone or replace information you added after setting it up.
Can you selectively restore an iPhone backup? Apple lets you choose which backup to use, but it does not let you select individual items inside an iCloud, Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder device backup. However, you may still retrieve selected data through iCloud sync, AOMEI FoneBackup, an iMazing backup export, or the recovery options on iCloud.com.
Apple device backups generally work as complete packages. When you restore from iCloud, you can choose a backup based on its date and size. You cannot open that backup during setup and select only Photos, Messages, one app, or several contacts.
If the destination iPhone is already set up, Apple also requires you to erase its content before restoring from iCloud backup. In addition, Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder do not provide selective recovery either.
However, some information associated with your Apple Account may not be stored only in a device backup. It might be:
Before restoring anything, identify where the required data is stored. That helps you avoid an unnecessary full recovery.
| 🧩 Your situation | ✅ What to do next |
|---|---|
| The required data is still synced with iCloud | Turn on the corresponding iCloud option |
| You have a previously created backup in AOMEI FoneBackup | Preview and restore selected items from it |
| The original iPhone still works and you need a flexible backup | Create a selective backup with AOMEI FoneBackup |
| You only have an Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder backup | Browse and export selected data with iMazing |
| The information was recently deleted from iCloud | Check iCloud.com data recovery options |
| You need all apps, settings, and device data | Perform an Apple full-backup restore |
Before continuing, back up the iPhone you are currently using. Do not erase or trade in the old device until you have checked that its important data exists in another location.
👍 Best for: Photos, contacts, Notes, and other information already stored and synced through iCloud—requires access to the same Apple Account.
iCloud sync and iCloud Backup are different. When an app uses iCloud sync, its information is stored in iCloud and kept updated across your signed-in devices. You may therefore be able to retrieve a data type without restoring the entire iPhone.
Step 1. Open Settings on the target iPhone, tap [your name] > iCloud.
Step 3. Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud and turn on iCloud option (e.g., Photos > Sync this iPhone) of the relevant app or data category.
👍 Best for: Windows users who already have an AOMEI FoneBackup backup or still have access to the source iPhone.
AOMEI FoneBackup is an iPhone backup and transfer tool for Windows PCs. Its Selective Backup feature lets you preview files and pick exactly what to back up - no need to back up everything. Plus, you can browse your backups whenever you want and restore just the files you choose.
iPhone backup and transfer tool for Windows PCs
Step 1. Open AOMEI FoneBackup on your Windows PC and connect your new iPhone with a USB data cable. Tap Trust if prompted.
Step 2. Under the My Backups tab, locate the backup you want to use and click the three-dots icon and choose Restore.
Step 3. Click the Photos icon to preview and select the items you want to restore. Confirm your target device and click Start Restore to selectively restore iPhone backup.
After the process finishes, open the corresponding apps (e.g., Photos) on the iPhone and check several restored items. If something is missing, re-open the backup and confirm that the required item was included when the backup was created.
AOMEI FoneBackup cannot recover info that is no longer on the source iPhone and was never included in one of its backups. If your only remaining copy is an Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder backup, use the next method.
👍 Best for: Viewing and exporting selected information from an Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder backup - exported data may not return directly to its original iPhone app.
On Windows, a local Apple backup may have been created with Apple Devices or iTunes. On a Mac, it is normally created through Finder. Apple can restore the complete backup, but its own restore screen does not let you browse individual items.
iMazing is available for Windows and macOS. It can open compatible local iPhone backups and display data categories such as Photos, Messages, Contacts, Notes, calendars, call history, Safari information, and app files. The actual content available depends on what the backup contains.
Step 1. Download and install iMazing on the Windows PC or Mac. ClickDevices to select your iPhone.
Step 2. Under the Tools tab, scroll down to Restore a Backup and tap it.
Step 3. Select a detected backup. For encrypted backup, enter the password.
Step 4. Choose which apps and what data will be restore, such as Photos, Messages, Contacts, or Notes.
Step 5. Confirm the restore options and click Restore.
👍 Best for: Recently deleted files or supported iCloud information - does not let you browse every item inside an iCloud device backup.
If the required information was stored or synced in iCloud and later deleted, iCloud.com may provide a more direct recovery route.
Step 1. Sign in to iCloud.com with the Apple Account used for the missing information.
Step 2. Scroll to the bottom of the iCloud.com and select Data Recovery.
Step 3. Choose an available option, such as Restore Files, Restore Contacts, Restore Calendars, or Restore Bookmarks.
Step 4. Select an available item or archive and confirm the recovery.
The selection behavior differs by data type. Safari bookmarks can be selected individually. Restoring an earlier contacts or calendar archive can replace the current synced version across your devices, although iCloud saves the current version before restoring the older one.
Photos, iCloud Drive files, and Notes may also have their own Recently Deleted locations. Recovery is only possible while the content remains available there.
Check the result before deleting any backup:
| Method | Data source | Main result | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| iCloud sync | Information already synced with iCloud | Syncs selected data types to iPhone | Does not extract an iCloud device backup |
| AOMEI FoneBackup | Backup created with AOMEI FoneBackup | Restores selected supported items | Requires its own existing backup or the source iPhone |
| iMazing | Apple Devices, iTunes, or Finder backup | Exports selected data to a computer | Export does not always write data back to iPhone |
| iCloud.com | Deleted or archived iCloud information | Recovers supported cloud data | Categories and recovery periods vary |
| Apple full restore | Complete iCloud or local backup | Restores the complete device backup | No item-level selection |
Top recommendations:
1. Can I restore only photos from an iPhone backup?
Apple’s standard restore screen does not let you restore only photos. If the pictures are in iCloud Photos, turn on iCloud Photos sync. If they exist only in a local backup, iMazing may be able to export them to a computer.
2. Can I restore contacts without restoring the whole iPhone?
Yes, if the contacts are synced with iCloud or another account. Enable the corresponding Contacts account. You may also restore an earlier iCloud contacts archive, but doing so replaces the current synced contacts across your devices.
3. Can I restore an iCloud backup without erasing my iPhone?
Apple requires an already configured iPhone to be erased before restoring an iCloud device backup. Synced iCloud information and supported iCloud.com recovery options can be retrieved without a full-device restore.
4. Can I restore only one app and its data?
Apple does not provide item-level restoration for one app from a device backup. Check whether the app saves its information through iCloud, Game Center, an app account, or the developer’s servers.
5. Can I choose which iPhone backup to restore?
You can choose among available backups based on their dates and sizes. Choosing a backup is different from selecting individual items inside it.
6. Can iMazing extract data from an encrypted backup?
It can browse supported encrypted backups if you enter the correct backup password. It cannot bypass an unknown encryption password.
Choose the method based on where your information is currently stored:
For future protection on a Windows PC, create a selective backup with AOMEI FoneBackup before resetting, replacing, or troubleshooting your iPhone. You can then preview the backup and restore only the supported items you need.
