Cannot convert to primary/logical partition

Situations in which a partition cannot be converted to primary/logical.

By Ivy    Updated on December 1, 2025

Sometimes when you want to convert a partition to primary or logical, you may find out that the convert option is greyed out. Why is that?

The following are cases where this may occur.

Situation 1: The partition is labelled "system", so cannot convert to logical.

Situation 2: The partition is on a GPT disk, which only supports primary partitions. So cannot convert to logical.

Situation 3: MBR partition style only supports 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions + 1 extended partition (which contains many logical partitions). If there are already 3 primary partitions + some logical partitions on the disk, then cannot convert to primary.
