To undo DiskPart Clean, identify the command and later writes first. Partition recovery may help after Clean, while completed Clean All overwrites the disk’s sectors.
If you ran DiskPart clean on the wrong disk, stop running disk commands and do not write any new data to that disk. There is no ordinary undo command that can automatically restore its previous layout.
Recovery may still be possible after clean because removing partition information differs from overwriting every data sector. However, clean all performs a much broader operation, and subsequent formatting or file transfers also affect what remains.
Before attempting recovery, check whether you ran clean or clean all, and what happened afterward. For the general recovery process, see how to recover deleted partition with data
You cannot directly undo DiskPart clean, but you may be able to restore deleted partition and the data if enough information remains and the data has not been overwritten.
Assigning drive letters or recreating partitions with their old names does not restore the original partition structure. Because clean applies to the selected physical disk, several volumes may disappear at once. Start by identifying the disk that was cleaned.
The two DiskPart clean commands do not have the same effect.
| ⌨️ Command | ⚙️ What it does | 🔄 Can you recover the data? |
|---|---|---|
| clean | Removes partitioning information from the selected disk | Possibly. The original data might still be there to scan |
| clean all | Overwrites every sector with zeros | No, anything in those overwritten sectors is gone for good |
Clean all is much more destructive than a regular clean.
Don't run either command again just to see what happens or to figure out which one was used. You'll only make things worse.
If the command window is still open, review the commands already shown. Do not run more disk commands to check what happened.
Did you do any of the following after running clean?
Stop any of these operations that are still running. More writes to the disk could make the deleted partitions and files harder to recover. If you ran DiskPart’s clean on a USB drive, see how to recover an accidentally deleted USB partition.
Open Disk Management and find the disk you cleaned.
If you're dealing with an external drive, double-check that the cable and power connection are secure. You can find more specific steps in external hard drive partition recovery.
AOMEI FastRecovery is Windows data recovery software with a Partition Recovery feature that restores a missing partition and the data inside it. It provides users with two scanning methods:
Download and install it on another physical drive, not on the drive you cleaned in Diskpart.
A reliable Windows data recovery software that easily recovers deleted or lost partitions or retrieve files.
Step 1. Open AOMEI FastRecovery, select Disk Data Recovery > Partition Recovery.
Step 2. Compare the disk’s model, capacity, number, and displayed layout with your original. Select the cleaned disk and click Next.
Step 3. Choose Fast Search to find deleted or lost partition quickly. If not, click Back, select Full Search instead.
Full Search scans the disk more extensively and generally takes longer than Fast Search.
Pause suspends searching temporarily, while Stop ends the current search.
Step 4. Compare the disk info with the former layout. Select the cleaned partition and click Next. Do not assume all belong together.
Step 5. Select the partition you cleaned in Diskpart and click Proceed.
After the restoration finishes, check the volume in Windows and open your folders or files to confirm everything is there.
If you were reinstalling Windows, wait until you have recovered your files and saved them to another drive.
Before continuing, check that:
If files are still missing or will not open, do not create partitions or format the disk. Contact technical support before continuing the Windows installation.
Does unallocated space prove every file was overwritten?
No. Unallocated describes the current layout, not a sector-by-sector record of surviving data.
Should the old partitions be recreated first?
No. Replacement partitions do not validate the original arrangement and can change information needed for recovery.
After accidentally running DiskPart clean, check which command you used and what you did afterward. Stop writing to the disk and confirm its original partition layout before recovery. AOMEI FastRecovery includes a Partition Recovery feature that can recover deleted partition and the data inside it.
Once the partitions are restored, make sure your files are complete and open correctly before reinstalling Windows or using the disk again.
