He could add a partition to his HDD; Windows utilities will do this. Can then backup his data/system partition to the new partition. Of course if the HDD fails completely then he would be stuck. So simple answer is to buy a USB HDD caddy and an HDD …

In the hierachical structure you can select an individual file or folder

Go to the 'Recovery' option and select the name of the backup task you used. It will then show you a hierarchical diagram of the files you have backed up.

I used the free version for many years and it successfully did all the backups that I needed. I then purchased the Professional version which has more functionality of course.
