Getting "The program is unable to connect to the network..." prompt on a USB external hard drive

Whenever i'm trying to restore from my USB external hard drive, it tells me "The program is unable to connect to the network. Please enter the correct credentials and check that your network is functioning correctly." and asks for a username and password. Please help!
