Backupper very slow

I'm a nooB... But I was able to get AOMEI backupper loaded on my PC that wont boot windows 10. Created bootable DVD. Selected  backup partition. Then I selected the windows drive and tried to back up to my external 1TB SATA HDD.
The back up started fast and got progressively slower. Left it overnight and came back and only 2% of 112 GB had been backed up.

Did I miss a step?
Is it possible to speeed this up by making changes before I start the backup?

  • Please run chkdsk /r first.
  • Can I do this from the Backupper command prompt?
  • Did chkdsk /r .
Got message saying that it was write protected. Cannot lock volume.

    Did chkdsk c: /f /r /x
Looks like progress hanging at stage 4: looking for bad clusters ETA 400hr.

  • Sorry... It was looking for bad clusters in user file data
  •  :) the check disk completed after many hours.
I ran Aomei backupper on the partition overnight. It created the image backup succesfully.
However, I couldnt access the files because of the permissions. (Tried various methods)
I took a leap of faith and ran system restore on the original drive. Then I downloaded the the backupper standard on the newly restored drive. Followed the instructions for mapping the image to a drive letter and 'voila'.
Used explorer on the computer to access the drive and the files were there.

Aomei Backupper worked for me. Did it take long? Yeah, but it worked. And there was something wrong with my system file.
