Mirror Sync taking forever and using huge amounts of space

I thought I understood how a Mirror Sync would work. However I have a couple of problems making it unusable for me.
I am trying to mirror a folder on a NAS that is 260gb. The original mirror takes over 24 hours...seems stuck at 16% and it is :counting files", or so it says. the space it is using, even before it finishes, is much more than the the size of the source directory.
Can someone tell me what is going on?
