AOMEI partition Assistant Professional - Clone

Hi:

I have a full bootable version of windows 11 with all my files and apps installed on an external usb SSD drive. However, when I clone this drive to another usb SSD drive of the same size, the cloned drive will not boot. I get a screen saying that windows needs to be repaired. If the target is supposed to be a clone of the source, why is this happening? I purchased the professional version of this software today for that purpose.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • When you say you cloned "this" drive to another SSD drive, do you mean you cloned the external usb SSD drive? If so, since this drive has just your files and apps on it, it won't boot because there is no WIN11 operating system on it.
If you clone the drive that your computer normally boots from onto an external SSD and then install that SSD into your computer to replace the existing drive, it should boot.
  • Hi Chris, thanks for your reply

The external usb SSD drive which I attempted to clone has everything on it including the Windows 11 Operating System. I originally created it via Rufus and then installed my apps on it. I am able to boot from it by going into boot sequence and changing the order. Note that my compter's internal drive's operating system is still Windows 10. So the bottom line is that this external windows 11 usb SSD drive behaves just an internal drive. Therefore, using clone, I expected the clone to behave the exact same way. But when I attempted to boot from the "cloned" drive (again changing the boot sequence), I immediately got a blue screen saying that my windows needs repair.

I hope this explains things better. Again, I purchased the professional version of the AOMEI partition assistant for this purpose.

"the cloned drive will not boot"
Please clone the drive again, using Exact-Sector-By-Sector setting.

I have bought many Aomei softwares, but it is not necessary to buy PA, or Backupper to clone a disk. You could use BU to create a disk image, then restore the disk image to the target disk. However, this is more time consuming. Did you pay full price for PA? You do not have to pay full price for PA, or BU. To get 50% off, install PA free or BU free on a PC, uninstall it, and a 50% off button appears.
After cloning your disk again with Exact-Sector-By-Sector setting, if the cloned disk does not boot, please use your Windows 11 USB to do automated startup repair. It is better to do Windows 11 automated startup repair from the USB than from the Windows Recovery partition WinRec.
Remember to always backup your essential files onto a small USB stick or cloud before doing deep operations, such as cloning and changing startup settings.
Which PA mode are you using for cloning? It is generally best to use PA-USB-WinPE instead of PA-app-WinPE. Do not use PA-app-PreOS mode.
Post a screenshot of all of your disks from PA.
    Backupper WinPE USB:
Add custom drivers, such as NVMe, if necessary. Does not work with some monitors.

    Manage multiple Windows installation boot

  • I want to add one more thing. I have an older computer which is not windows 11 compliant. Yet I am able to boot this external windows 11 usb ssd drive from it by simply changing the boot sequence. So I have a complete portable windows 11 system drive which I could take anywhere an use it.
  • Thank you AiArtisan.

The sector-by-sector setting worked. The cloned usb ssd drive booted successfully. That is all I need.

    Thats great!
Also, if you do want a good portable Windows 10 that can work in many PCs, you could try Aomei WinToGo, it is old but free and worked well for me, use the UEFI VHDX setting for modern PCs. The best WinToGo for Windows both 10 11 I have found is Hasleo, but some of the features are not free.
For WinPE brands, the most clone, backup, recovery utilities for the least cost and least effort is Hirens.
    Backupper WinPE USB:

    Aomei WinPE Builder USB:
Partition Assistant, Backupper, Recuva, 7zip, OSF Mount, CPU-Z, Bootice, diskmgmt.msc. Does not support any additional drivers, such as some internal NVMe disks.

    Hasleo WinToUSB - Personal WindowsToGo
    https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/index.html
Hirens Boot PE - live USB tool suite
    https://www.hirensbootcd.org
160 utilities, old BU 6.5.1, PA 9.2.1. Put custom drivers, such as NVMe drivers, into the “CustomDrivers” folder. Hirens is not recommended in combination with Ventoy USB.

  • That you, AiArtisan for all the information.

All that matters to me now is that the sector-by-sector setting enabled me to create a windows 11 clone which booted successfully after changing the boot sequence. I am getting very comfortable with windows 11 without upgrading my external windows 10 system at this time.

I will consider your other info in the future.
