PreOs taking a really long time

edited October 2023 in AOMEI Products Support
Hi,
I'm trying to migrate a 1.4Tb drive (650 free Gb) to a 900Gb drive (empty).
It has been running for over 6 hours now and it's only at 3%
Total:3 PCT, Current:3 PCT, Status: 23

What should I do, is this normal ?
How much longer will it take ?
Should I abord ?

If PA must reboot to complete an operation, Aomei generally recommends WinPE mode, instead of PreOS mode. You can also use PA WinPE USB, or Backupper application, Backupper WinPE USB.
No, that is not normal. Can you please reply to tell us which sector mode you chose, Intelligent-Sector, or Exact-Sector-By-Sector?
    1) Which motherboard mode Legacy-BIOS, UEFI-CSM, UEFI-nonCSM?
    2) What PC brand, year, model #, desktop or laptop?
    3) HDD, SSD 2.5", SSD M.2 SATA, SSD M.2 NVMe?
    4) Hard Drive partition table MBR or GPT?
    5) Aomei product tier Standard, Pro, Other?
    6) Windows version 10, 11, Home, Pro, Enterprise?
    Backupper WinPE USB:
Add custom drivers, such as NVMe, if necessary. Does not work with some monitors.

    Aomei WinPE Builder USB:
Partition Assistant, Backupper, Recuva, 7zip, OSF Mount, CPU-Z, Bootice, diskmgmt.msc. Does not support any additional drivers, such as some internal NVMe disks.

Free Tool not from Aomei, for advanced users.
    Clonezilla - non-GUI cloning

If the source disk has Bad Sectors, use Expert Mode > "-rescue" option to continue cloning all readable sectors

  • Thank you for your response

    I picked clone Disk Quickly

Thank you, I did not even consider that this could be a server. I am experienced with most Aomei products, PC types, disk types, but I do not have experience with servers.
    "I picked clone Disk Quickly"
Clone Disk quickly means Intelligent-Sector mode.
It's possible that PA is taking a long time on the shrink partition to fit smaller disk task. PA is great software, however the 1 thing I do not recommend people generally use it for is to shrink, expand, or move partitions, because it takes a very long time. In the future for this type of task, please use Backupper to create an image file, then restore image to target disk, that may go faster, and as Aomei support says, you should generally not use PreOS mode, use WinPE mode. You could also use Disk Management to shrink partition ahead of time, so PA does not have to do that.
  • @Berdan, Have you completed the clone now? If not, please try to do the disk clone again. We suggest that you can delete all partitions manually on the target disk, and then do the clone again.
  • The operation, has not finished under PreOS, I have restarted the operation using WinPE and this has also failed without error message after over 48 hours of processing.

    I will abandon Aomei software.

Berdan, thank you for letting us know that application-PA-WinPE mode did not work in this case. I understand your wanting to try a new product. When you did the clone again, did you follow the suggestion, and use Exact-Sector-By-Sector method? If this issue is happening due to unreadable sectors on your disk, you could try Clonezilla, it can continue cloning even if the sectors are unreadable, and it is free unlimited use.

  • @Berdan, Please try to run chkdsk command to check and fix partitions on the source drive. And then, please delete all partitions on target disk, then do the disk clone again.
