Copy os partition from bios legacy MBR SSD SATA to uefi GPT SSD nvme

Hello everyone,

I am interested in purchasing aomei backupper pro software.
I need a technical confirmation prior to purchase it and start procedure, please.

I bought a new computer, I would like to clone my existing windows 10 install on the new computer (I need to be able to use my current configuration for productivity aspect while new computer is not fully operational and my configuration includes a lot of softwares to install so I need to ensure that I don't loose any work).

The old computer runs windows 10 on a SSD sata configured as a MBR computer in legacy bios mode.
The new computer will run Windows 10 on a SSD NVMe configured as GPT in UEFI bios mode (and so it is a totally different HW configuration).

So I plan to connect nvme though an external usb adapter to my old computer. Runs aomei through my old computer to clone my current windows install. Then install the NVMe in the new computer .

Will it work ? If it is ok, could you guide me to the correct procedure or guide to do it please ?

Thanks for your help

    1) The free version of Backupper allows for MBR clone.
    2) If your desire is to have your new PC use a system disk with MBR, you have only 2 motherboard options: Legacy BIOS, and UEFI-CSM. You cannot use UEFI-nonCSM with an MBR system disk, only a GPT system disk. You may use any type of data disks. Before performing any other steps, please explore your new PC UEFI settings, and confirm that it has the mode you need.
    3) If your goal is to clone one disk to another, you may use a USB NVMe enclosure, as you have suggested, but this is not required. You could instead use the easier method of using Backupper USB WinPE to create a disk image .ADI, and then restore the disk image .ADI to your new PC.
    4) After your research, if you decide to buy Backupper, you could uninstall your free version of Backupper, and it will offer you 50% off purchase.
Aomei WinPE Builder 2.0 USB, includes: Partition Assistant, Backupper, Recuva, OSF Mount, CPU-Z, Bootice. Does not support some internal NVMe disks, or other additional drivers.

Add custom drivers, such as NVMe, if necessary. Does not work with some monitors.

    1) I am sorry, BU and PA do not clone MBR system disk for free, only MBR data disk.
Here are 2 more softwares not from Aomei you could use to do that for free.
    Disk Genius - application
    https://www.diskgenius.com
    Clonezilla - non-GUI cloning
    https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
If the source disk has Bad Sectors, use Expert Mode > "-rescue" option to continue cloning all readable sectors

  • Thanks aiArtisan. Finally I bought the licenses of bu and pa. I will give a try and post comment/procedure applied here :)
  • Hello
So what I did and works
1/do a backup with aomei backupper of initial system partition in case of error.
2/ convert initial disk from MBR to GPT on initial system through apmei partition assistant
3/ do a new backup of converted initial  partition with aomei backupper
3/ do a universal restore with aomei backupper on the new computer

It works but chldsk executes on each startup to repair C. I tried to repair errors but there is always logical errors even if NVMe disk is without physical problem.. maybe you have a workaround about it ?

Note : I tried to copy my initial partition on an external drive then to convert it to GPT and to clone partition on ne computer but this method didn't work

    Best

1)Thank you for telling us what you did Masta. Could you please reply with a screenshot from PA before changing anything, and 1 after, thank you. This is a common request in tech forums.
    2) It may not be required to change your partition table from MBR to GPT. If your new motherboard includes the Compatibility Support Module CSM, then you could use the original MBR Windows disk from your Legacy-BIOS PC with that. Most new motherboards today no longer have that feature, but I have seen some that do, please reply after you have checked for that.
  • Hello,

    1) above it is a screen copy of PA. i don't have the screen copy of the previous instalaltion but it was organized with MBR configuration > on Disk 0, there was Windows on C and repair partition  (maybe it is the problem as I don't see it anymore ?)
    2) It is required to use GPT with NVME on this motherboard and I already use the configuration as is and made changes to it.

THe OS boots and works but there is this logical partition error. maybe i should add a windows backup partition ?
    Thanks for your help
  • @Masta, What mean is this logical partition error? Could you explain it further?
  • *It is a logical error that remains detected though chksk. It is not a physical error (scandisk) nor a logical partition error (my bad)
    Thanks
  • A logical error on c: system partition
  • I ask myself if the chldsk recurrent error is linked to :
    - partition order, the efi partition is the first one then there is system partition, is it correct?
    - windows repair partition has not been copied

    Thanks for help

    Hi
I read that a msr partition is needed in a uefi installation.
    My partition should be :
    1) efi (present)
    2) msr (looks to be missing in pa)
    3) system partition (present and working, converted on initial pc from MBR to GPT with pA)
    4) repair partition (seems to be missing also )

    Source:
    https://learn.microsoft.com/fr-fr/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/configure-uefigpt-based-hard-drive-partitions?view=windows-11

So I think that the chkdsk problem may come from missing msr.
Do you know what to do ?

If I find solution I will post it here
  • @Masta, MSR is Microsoft Reserved Partition. It is not related to system boot and run. Generally, our program doesn't create it when converting disk from MBR to GPT.
We don't quite understand the logical error you said. Maybe you can take a screenshot so that we check it further.
