What is the difference between System Backup and Disk Backup?

When should System Backup be used instead of Disk Backup, or  vice-versa?

What exactly are the differences?

    Hi Jim,

System Backup will just back up the partitions which are necessary for operating system, like system partition and boot partition. It is used in case system corrupted or other system problem.

Disk Backup will back up all the partitions on the disk.

Which should be selected depends on your request.

  • Sorry to barge in here.

The SYSTEM backup does as YoungCheng says, just backs up the OS's partitions necessary to get the OS running.  If YOU or the PCs manufacturer created other partitions for like recovery or a separate DATA parition these will not be covered in the SYSTEM backup.  The DISK is the whole DISK, every partition, the OS's, the manufacturers (if any exist) and any that YOU made.

Unless you made a SEPARATE data partition, either when you installed Windows or created one afterward, and it contains a lot of data you might back up with some other method - I would advise doing a DISK backup most if not ALL the time.  This way you are sure to get ALL the partitions that are on the drive.

  • Hi Rootman,

Thank you so much for your further explanation. It's exactly correct.
