Backup (clone) freezes at 4.81 GB - Java Issue?

I regularly clone my desktop 1 TB HD to an external 1 TB HD using the AOMEI 

Backupper Standard program


I use AOMEI's 'Intelligent Sector Backup' rather than the 'sector by sector' 

setting.


For reasons unrelated to backing up, a couple of days ago I uninstalled Java 

from my desktop


Since then all backup attempts freeze at about 4.81 GB of data copied


I have tried the following with no success:


-reinstalled Java

-uninstalled and reinstalled both Java and AOMEI Backupper

-performed a full format of the external HD

-tried the backup on a different external HD

-tried a 'sector by sector' backup


I expect I am missing something simple, any help would be greatly 

appreciated.

    Please check whether there are bad sectors on the disk.
