"Too many fragment files on the volume needs to be defragged..." error

I run into "Too many fragment files on the volume needs to be defragged. Or reserved space insufficient, please release more free space." error.

The problem is that mine is an SSD, and the error persists even after trimming the SSD with Smart Defrag.

What should I do?

  • Sorry for this problem. What is the actual operation you do? It is the disk clone? Please try to create the an unallocated space at the end of the disk. Then you need to create the WINPE to do the operatin again.

  • The operation I tried was to "split partition".

The same error also triggers when I run "decrease size of partition" to create unallocated space at the end of the disk as you suggested.

    What should i do?

  • Maybe you need to create the bootable media with Partition Assistant and boot into the WINPE to do the operation. Please try.

  • When I "apply" split partition, my computer goes into "pre-installation OS" mode.  Isn't that the same as booting into the WinPE?

  • NO, the pre-os mode is not WINPE. Please create it and boot into the winpe to do the operation.
