Clone System - won't boot from USB external drive after removing internal drive

I have spent a couple weeks trying different ways to back up my Acer
Laptop hard drive.  Ideally, I'd like to have a cloned image on my
external USB hard drive that could be used in the event of a laptop
drive crash.

The laptop drive has three partitions:

PQService with 14GB contains what appears to be the Acer Boot manager files,

a 100MB partition with restore sofware,

and the C: partition with programs and data

It
appears from your support material that Clone System can do this.  I
have tried at least three times.  The USB drive clone procedure
completes and I can see the C: partition files. I unplug my laptop
harddrive and change the boot sequence to start on the USB drive.  This
morning Windows begins to launch and the the blue screen of death
flashes and begins the boot up sequence again.

I had tried
using the Windows Restore disk to start up and maybe repair the
necessary files on the USB drive.  It still wouldn't start up.

Please advise:

If I do a Clone System, should I see two partitions (C and the PQService partition?)

Is
there something in this setup that won't permit booting from the USB
drive?  It appears to be possible in the Acer bios to set the USB drive
as the first boot up device.  Your documentation (which I have read
through multiple times) seems to indicate a cloned system should work
here.  Both drives use MBR.

If I can't get the Clone System
to boot from the USB drive, then I am thinking that System Backup would
be the next best option.  Any other options that you coulde suggest?Help, please, with Clone System. USB external drive won't boot

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

  • Hi David,

Yes, please use System Backup to backup your operating system first, then restore it to your USB drive. After that, please connect the drive as the internal drive, then booting from it.

BTW, you mentioned that you use System Clone to clone the OS to the usb drive. System Clone doesn't support to clone OS to external drives. Are you sure that you use System Clone?
