How to enable app password for email servers

Enabling app passwords for email servers is typically done to enhance security when using third-party applications or devices that don't support modern authentication methods like OAuth 2.0. These app passwords act as a substitute for your regular account password and are generally more secure when used with less secure applications.

AOMEI Backupper supports Email Backup, which needs to add mailboxes first. For some email servers, they need to use an app password to be added.

The process to enable app passwords may vary depending on the email service provider you're using. Below are general steps to enable app passwords for popular email services like Gmail, Yahoo, iCloud Mail, AOL Mail, Mail.ru and so on.

Gmail (Google Account)

1. Go to your Google Account settings: https://myaccount.google.com/

2. Click on "Security" in the left-hand menu.

3. Scroll down to the "Signing in to Google" section.

3. Look for the "App passwords" option and click on "App passwords."

4. You may be asked to sign in again for security reasons.

5. Under "Select app," choose the app for which you want to generate the app password (e.g., Mail on iPhone, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.).

6. Under "Select device," choose the appropriate device or select "Other" if your specific app/device is not listed.

7. Click "Generate" to create the app password.

Yahoo

Here is the translation of the steps to enable app password in Yahoo Mail:

1. Access your Yahoo Account:

• Open Yahoo's website: https://www.yahoo.com/
• Click on the "Sign In" button at the top right corner and log in using your Yahoo email address and password.

2. Go to Account Security Settings:

• After successful login, click on your user profile picture (or your avatar) at the top right corner.
• Select "Account Security."

3. Create an App Password:

• On the "Account Security" page, locate the "App Passwords" section.
• If you haven't enabled app passwords before, you might see a button or link like "Enable App Passwords."
• Click on "Enable App Passwords" or a similar button.

4. Verify Your Identity:

• You might be asked to enter your Yahoo email password again to verify your identity.

5. Choose App and Device:

• From the dropdown menu, select the application or device for which you want to generate the app password. If your app or device is not listed, choose the "Other" option.
• Click "Generate" or a similar button.

Yahoo will generate a random app password for you. Copy this password and paste it into the password field of AOMEI Backupper to add Yahoo email.

iCloud Mail

iCloud Mail does not support traditional app passwords. Instead, iCloud uses modern authentication methods such as app-specific passwords and two-factor authentication to enhance account security.

If you want to use iCloud Mail with a third-party application or device (such as AOMEI Backupper’s email backup), you typically need to generate an app-specific password for that particular app or device. Here are the general steps to generate an app-specific password in iCloud Mail:

1. Access the Apple ID website:

• Open the Apple ID website: https://appleid.apple.com/
• Log in using your Apple ID and password.

2. Go to the "Security" settings:

• After successful login, find and click on "Password & Security" or a similar option.

3. Generate an app-specific password:

• In the "Security" settings page, look for "App-Specific Passwords" or "Generate Passwords" option.
• Click on "Generate an App-Specific Password."

4. Name the password:

• For easier identification, you can give a name to the generated password to indicate which app or device it is created for.

Now, you can use the newly generated app-specific password to log in to your iCloud Mail account in the AOMEI Backupper.

AOL Mail

Here is the translation of the steps to enable app password in AOL Mail:

1. Log in to your AOL Account:

• Open AOL's website: https://www.aol.com/
• Click on the "Login" button at the top right corner and log in using your AOL email address and password.

2. Access Account Security Settings:

• After successful login, click on the "Options" icon at the top right corner of the page, then select "Account Info."

3. Open the "Security" settings:

• In the "Account Info" page, choose the "Security" tab.

4. Enable App Password:

• In the "Security" page, find the "App Passwords" section.
• If you haven't enabled app passwords before, you may see a "Generate app password" or similar button. Click on that button.

5. Confirm Your Identity:

• AOL will ask you to re-enter your account password or perform other verification to confirm your identity.

6. Choose App and Device:

• In the pop-up window, select the application or device for which you want to generate the app password from the dropdown menu. If your app or device is not listed, choose the "Other" option.
• Click "Generate" or a similar button.

AOL will generate a random app password for you. Copy this password and paste it into the password field of Email Backup in AOMEI Backupper.

Mail.ru

Mail.ru does not provide traditional app password functionality. Instead, Mail.ru employs other security measures to protect user accounts, such as two-factor authentication.

If you wish to use Mail.ru mail with a third-party application or device (such as AOMEI Backupper’s email backup), you may need to set up a separate application-specific password or grant the application access to your Mail.ru mailbox.

Generally, the process to enable third-party application or device access to Mail.ru mail is as follows:

1. Log in to your Mail.ru account:

• Open the Mail.ru website: https://mail.ru/
• Log in using your Mail.ru email address and password.

2. Access account security settings:

• After successful login, find and click on the settings icon (usually a gear-shaped icon), then select "Settings" or "Security."

3. Enable third-party application access:

• In the "Settings" or "Security" page, look for options related to third-party application or device access permissions.
• You may see a setting named "App authorization," "App password," or similar. Click on this option.

4. Generate or set an app password:

• Follow the instructions on the page to set up a new app password or generate a dedicated password for your third-party application.

Then, you can input the generated app password or the set password into AOMEI Backupper to allow it access to your Mail.ru mailbox.
