My iCloud storage is almost full, and the backup failed
----This is the first time that I backup my new iPhone to iCloud, but it just says
not enough iCloud storage. I want to know why. Could you please give me some advice?
- Question from Apple Community
iCloud has been a common tool for Apple users. It is quite convenient for you to save iPhone
data to the server. You could use it to sync data like photos, contacts to another iPhone,
or even restore the full backup of your old iPhone to new iPhone. You must want to know more
about how to create an iCloud backup.
You would get 5GB of free iCloud storage to backup your iPhone. If you don’t have too many
local files in every app, it is enough for you to backup your iPhone. When you go to
iPhone Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Backup > iCloud Backup to tap
Back Up Now, it would backup most important data to the cloud, but sometimes
you might be noticed that This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not
enough iCloud storage available.
You should know that iCloud storage is shared by the devices signed in the
same Apple ID. If you use the ID on your old iPhone or share it with your family, the iCloud
storage might be consumed by other devices, so your backup failed.
You would get to know what to do when your iCloud storage is full and your iCloud backup
failed in this article.

Solution 1: Check iCloud storage
and clear iCloud data
If your backup failed for iCloud storage, the first step is to check your iCloud storage
status. Go to iPhone Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage
Storage. You could see all the data having been saved to iCloud. Usually,
photos, messages (there might be a lot of photos in iMessages), and old backups would take
most of the space in iCloud. You could select the unwanted data to delete.
In Manage storage > Backups, you could see which devices have been backed up to iCloud. If
you are sure they are no longer needed, delete them. If you want to check if there is still
useful data, you could download iCloud backup to computer.
Solution 2: Check iCloud Backup
Size
After knowing how much available storage in iCloud, you have to know the size of your iCloud
backup. If the backup size this time is larger than the left iCloud storage, iPhone won’t
backup to iCloud. iCloud backup would save settings and app data, and you could decide to
save the data from which app.
Go to iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups > [device name] and you
could see the prepared data to be uploaded to iCloud. Unchecking the app means not saving
data from that app.
If you are sure there should be enough space to backup iPhone, after checking iCloud storage
status and iCloud backup size, you could try the follow methods to check iOS issues and
repair the problems.

Solution 3: Change iCloud Storage
Plan
When iCloud backup failed for short of storage, the direct solution is to purchase more
storage.
Go to iCloud > Manage Storage > Change iCloud Storage Plan and choose
a proper plan for you. 50GB iCloud storage costs $0.99 per month, 200GB $2.99 per month, and
2TB $9.99 per month.

Solution 4: Reset Network/All
Settings
iCloud requires the Internet to connect iPhone to the server. If some settings go wrong, the
backup might fail and it tells that you have no enough iCloud storage. You need to reset
network settings or all settings to refresh the system.
Go to iPhone Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings to
solve the problem. Resetting network would erase the passcode of the connected Wi-Fi. You
should make sure you still could connect to at least an available Wi-Fi.
If iCloud backup keeps failing, you might need to select Reset All Settings.
Solution 5: Upgrade iOS to repair
iCloud issue
If iCloud storage bug happens to too many users, and their iPhone are not backing up to
iCloud, Apple would repair the issue and release the latest package. You could check iPhone
update by going to iPhone Settings > General > Software Update to
upgrade iPhone to the latest iOS.

Solution 6: Check iCloud status
from Apple’s site
If Apple shuts down iCloud service, you might not able to backup iPhone to iCloud. iCloud
backup might fail for insufficient iCloud storage. You could go to Apple’s site to check System Status. If iCloud service is temporarily
closed, you need to wait for the issue to be solved.
