Does the drive you are restoring to have to have already been formatted MBR or GPT depending on the original drive.  In other words, if I do a disk backup of an MBR formatted disk, will it restore and be bootable if the disk I restore it to was formatted as a GPT disk? One scenario would be I do an image backup of an MBR formatted 1 TB drive and buy a brand new 4 TB drive to restore it to.  Will it restore to the first 1 TB and then be bootable?

  • Yes, you can restore to a GPT disk, but you need to change the boot mode first.
