Toshiba Ext drive for IMac

My IMac backs up to a IGB Toshiba drive. However, every once and a while I get the message that the backup will not work. All I have to do is to disconnect the hard drive and then ask it to backup after re-connecting. It then works for awhile before giving me the same 'backup failed' message. What is happening?
