M.2 sizes compatibility

I was searching for SSD to upgrade a laptop, and there is one thing i wasn't sure about but couldnt find an answer to it.

So, I learned that there are a few M.2 sizes that are commonly used, 2242 2260 2280 and such.

Are the smaller ones compaible with the larger ones?

The laptop Im looking at has a compartment for 2280, and I was wondering if I will have any problems using the smaller 2260 and others.
