Immediate switch off of external drive

Yesterday, when I plugged in my portable disk to the computer, the LED light on the drive’s connector came on as usual and Windows7 played its “USB device detected” sound. However, around 10 seconds later, the light switched off and Windows sounded “USB device disconnected”. What’s more is that the drive didn’t show up in My Computer or Disk Management; and, there wasn’t any error message. Can any help?

    It worked well before the accident. Since then, I tried several times but all failed. I'm not quiet clear about the drive type and only know it's a 500gb SSD.
