Notebook won't boot after restoring image

I backed up my Windows 8.1 to a USB hdd using AOMEI backupper from a dying hdd and after replacing the hdd with a fresh one restored the backed up image using the recovery usb media. The reovery was successful as reported by backupper but the windows isn't booting. It is an HP machine (compaq 15-s007tu). Is there a way to repair the restored image?

    Did you make a system backup?

    Is the new disk initialized as GPT instead of MBR? I guess your old HDD was GPT since it was Win8.1. The new one has to be of the same kind: GPT/MBR.
