File permission exploring backup

I am trying to explore files from a backup of my old computer.  I can attach the drive and see some forlders.  When I try to open a folder, I am told I do not have permission to access the contents of the folder.  If I try to take ownership and give myself permission the process fails saying the folder is read only.  If I try to remove read only status it fails.  Not much good making backups if one cannot acces the files.

    You are using Windows Explorer of course. That is the only program that doesn't allow you to view the files of another computer. Use any other program or Explorer. Like Q-dir.exe (google it) or even the command prompt CMD.exe.
