Error 4104: Image fails to verify

I have been using AOMEI Backupper for a couple of years without any problems.  Recently it has failed to verify  backup images. Error 4104.

If I do the backup and verify as a continuous exercise the backup is not listed in the AOMEI program app although it can be found on the disk via windows explorer.

If I do the backup without a verify then it is available via the program app and the image can be fully explored and all looks OK. If I then 'Check Image' it fails with the same error message.

The log file is large but the section relating to the failure is shown below:

I regularly backup separately to two external Hard Disks; Seagate 3TB and a WD 2TB. The issue occurs on whichever disk is used.

I am using AOMEI 3.2. I reinstalled this and also tried reinstalling 3.1. This did not solve the problem.

I have run CHKDSK on the PC and the external drives and no errors are shown.

On the PC I also ran dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and sfc /scannow and all is OK.

I have also run the backup without compression in case this was the issue (only saves 10% of space) but this did not help either.

I have noticed, via the forums, that similar problems have happened to other users but no solution has been forthcoming.

I can run windows built in system image backup which appears to function correctly (although I have not attempted a restore from this).

The AOMEI Backupper is a terrific program and it would be most helpful if I could be assisted in getting this issue resolved

Comments

  • Please try to explore the image, if you can do it sucessfully, the image is ok for restore.

For 4104 error, we need more time to analyse it, sorry for the inconvenience.

  • I had this 4104 problem with a brand new full backup. I think I found a solution: My event viewer showed this error: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Since Aomei uses VSS for backing up I checked google for a solution and here is what I found:https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=563..Follow the direction then the backup wsill verify\

  • Sorry for that, if you cannot do the explore, the imge is not right. We do not have the solution currently, but we will find the solution ASAP. Thanks digiti

Dear Admin, Please see my solution above concerning VSS permissions it worked; now my images verify. Check my enclosed link in that post.

  • yes, we check it. It is one solution and we will analyse it more clearly. Because this error is shown for many reasons. But thanks you again. Love you

  • I just started using Backupper on both my Windows Pro and Windows Home machines. It works well on Pro, but I get the same 4104 error on the Home PC. I added Network Service to Permissions  as suggested above by digiti. Now when I verify, I get:

Report of the backup/sync is as follows:
    Computer Name:MARYLOU-DEN
    Plan Name:System Backup(3)
    Task Type:Incremental Backup
    Destination Path:F:\Backerupper\System Backup(3)\
    Execution Result:Failed
    Error Code:76288008
    Starting Time:Thu Feb 22 17:00:40 2018
    Finish Time:Thu Feb 22 17:10:04 2018
    Description:Failed to complete the operation.

  • @Al_N Is it able to explore or restore the backup image?

  • I can explore the backup image. I am VERY reluctant to test the Restore. My concern is that if there is anything messed up in the backup file (as a result of the error), it may mess up my system during the restore process.

I also removed Network Service from Permissions (that apparantly caused the error), and did another incremental backup and got the same error message.

  • It will restore without any problems, don't worry.

  • Same problem. Adding Network Service to Permissions  as suggested above by digiti worked just fine.
