Is it best to format partitions before restoration

Hi there,

I was looking in the help pages and cannot seem to find where it is covered about whether a format is neccesary of all partitions before a full computer restore. I assumed this would be cleaner and help things run more smoothly. I'd use images  using backupper. Is it true to say when Aomei help pages say it will instead overwrite the current partition that this restoration process formats the disk before sending the image back anyway ?

I intend using an external hard disk to send the image back to my main computer when it is needed.
