System image restore help can’t get working

I had a motherboard replaced on my Dell laptop. Fresh windows install came back from dell Windows 10

-installed AOMEI trial. Would not take my professional license so filed case on that topic

-created winpe boot media

-booted into winpe

- restore - system image (image from same laptop same memory and disk size but new motherboard now and drive is ssd on motherboard sometime is new as well)

-created winpe media

-all 3 partitions are shown from the system
image.i could
only selected the large c partition . There was no mapping of image partitions to disk partitions

-then next screen shows these partitions with arrow into a single drive for which a single partition must be selected?

what am I doing wrong? Do I need to partition the drive and wipe out the partitions? Using what cmd
line and disk partition tool?

why the heck is this not easier I cannot find a single
’how to’ for my situation….

see pics . I did not proceed.

Yes, that does seem unusual, Josh. Please cancel the operation, and then click Menu > refresh in upper right corner.
I see that your source disk image was the modern ESP/EFI/UEFI/GPT type, which does match your destination disk GPT. I do not think those settings are the problem.
If refresh does not solve the problem, please reply with
    1) Which hard drive type HDD, SSHD, SSD 2.5", SSD M.2 SATA, SSD M.2 NVMe?
    2) What Windows version 10, 11, Home, Pro, Enterprise?
    3) Please upload the log file. C:\Program Files (x86)\AOMEI\AOMEI Backupper\<Version>\log\reg.log
    4) Please post a screenshot of your issue, and also of
    Cmd
    Diskpart
    list disk
    select disk #
    list partition
    list volume
    detail disk
If you are migrating Windows to a dissimilar PC, or a PC with a new motherboard, you should probably use the "Universal Restore" setting.
Please confirm you are using BU current version 7.4.
You are using the main, popular version of BU. There is an alternate WinPE BU version that detects most, but not all disks. This USB version is more versitle. You could try this verison if the main, popular version is not performing.

Suite of tools that includes Backupper, Partition Assistant, Recuva, 7zip, OSF Mount, CPU-Z, Bootice, DiskMgmt.msc. Supports x64 portable apps. Some internal M.2 NVMe disks may not be detected. No additional drivers.

    "take my professional license"
Instead of using BU Trial, please download BU Pro version, that will activate.
In rare cases, if it does not activate, such as when you install a new motherboard, or new PC, you could contact Aomei directly by email.
    Backupper Pro Edition

Keeps license activated when updating Pro version.

  • @josh1971 There is indeed an issue with the system backup restore because the system backup covers including C: and .EFI and system-reserved partitions and it is only able to select one partition as the destination. We advise you to first boot your PC into WinPE created by AOMEI Backupper and use the command line or the disk wipe tool under WinPE to wipe the C:,.efi, and recovery partition first and then restore the backup. https://www.ubackup.com/help/create-bootable-disk.htmlhttps://www.ubackup.com/help/disk-wipe.html

Thank you @admin , for your excellent diagnosis of the destination disk needing to be erased. I should have thought of that. The fastest way to do that is
    Cmd
    Diskpart
    List disk
    Select Disk #
    Clean
    Con GPT
    LIst disk
    Exit
    BU > Refresh

The user could also use Aomei Partition Assistant USB tool for easier erasing.
